Congratulations to SMS 2018 Graduates!

The School of Molecular Sciences would like to congratulate its spring 2018 graduates on all of its hard-earned academic accomplishments! This spring, the School of Molecular Sciences graduated 246 students overall, including 11 doctoral students, 3 with a Master’s degree in Chemistry, and 232 undergraduate students awarded either Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, or environmental chemistry. Our students have worked hard to complete their rigorous and fulfilling studies and we are proud of their countless achievements. We look forward to their continued success in the future!

Recognition of Graduates in Doctoral Programs

Ara Austin, PhD (Chemistry), Mentor: Ian Gould

"Factors that Contribute to Organic Chemistry Performance"

“Ara has become an expert in how socio-cultural factors contribute to learning and success. She uncovered the motivation and cognitive factors that control student learning in large organic chemistry classes, and discovered and defined a new form of social capital that is important in college-level science learning environments.”– Ian Gould

Saswata Banerjee, PhD (Chemistry), Mentor: Hao Yan/Yan Liu

"Stabilization of 3D DNA Nanostructures for In vivo Applications and Developing an Assay to Estimate Stability"

“Saswata Benerjee is very hard working and persistent in his research. He developed methods to estimate the stability and a few ways to enhance the stability of the DNA nanostructures in a biological environment. His studies paved the way to extend the DNA nanostructures for in vivo applications.”– Yan Liu

Christa Bockisch, PhD (Chemistry), Mentor: Ian Gould

"Hydrothermal Organic Reduction and Deoxygenation"

“Christa dived into a new project on new organic chemistry inspired by geology and made it her own. She discovered several important and useful new hydrothermal reactions for selective reduction and deoxygenation of biomass-related structures, that take place in water alone and use only the most benign and green reagents.” – Ian Gould

Grayson Boyer, PhD (Biochemistry), Mentor: Everett Shock

"Thermodynamic Modeling of Lipid Adaptation in Thermophilic Microbes"

“Grayson’s work is a revolutionary step forward in the emerging field of geobiochemistry — the notion that biochemistry emerged from already existing geochemical processes, and continues to reflect those origins. His is the first comprehensive approach to the thermodynamics and composition of lipids at the microbiome level placed in the context of the external environment.” – Everett Shock

Yinnan Chen, PhD (Biochemistry), Mentor: Julian Chen

"Characterization of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Factors that Regulate Telomerase Repeat Addition"

“Yinnan is a well-rounded graduate student who has contributed greatly to my lab. His project aims to elucidate a unique telomerase-specific mechanism of sequence-dependent pausing which controls telomerase activity of repeat synthesis. Yinnan's recently published finding has the potential to lead to innovative, telomerase based anti-aging therapeutics.” – Julian Chen

Jesse Coe, PhD (Chemistry), Mentor: Petra Fromme/Scott Sayres

"Life in motion: Visualizing Biomacromolecules by Time-resolved Serial Femtosecond Crystallography"

“Jesse is an exceptional student. His thesis focused on fs crystallography of membrane proteins was the best any of my students has ever written. He has graduated with 18 papers published including 10 co-authored papers in Science, Cell, and Nature journals…he will start his post-doc position at Stanford in May where he will work on cryo-EM. I expect him to become faculty at a leading research university in the future.” – Petra Fromme

Bryan Donaphon, PhD (Chemistry), Mentor: Marcia Levitus

"Interchromophoric Interactions between TMR, Alexa, and BODIPY Fluorophores"

“Bryan made important contributions to our understanding of interchromophoric effects in dyes commonly used in single-molecule biophysics. He distinguished himself for his excellent attention to detail and rigor in the interpretation of the data.” – Marcia Levitus

Shadi Ferdosi, PhD (Chemistry), Mentor: Chad Borges

"Diagnostic and Prognostic Capacity of Serum Glycan Nodes in Different Types of Cancer"

“Shadi systematically characterized the ability of glycan “nodes” to diagnose, predict progression and predict survival in lung cancer and bladder cancer patients. Without her natural knack for high-quality, highly reproducible sample preparation, great attention to detail and tenacious and persistent attitude, this project would not have worked out!” – Chad Borges

Seyed Ebrahim Hashemi Amiri, PhD (Chemistry), Mentor: Cun-Zheng Ning

"Growth and Characterization of InGaAsP Alloy Nanowires with Widely Tunable Bandgaps for Optoelectronic Applications"

Joseph Rheinhardt, PhD (Chemistry), Mentor: Daniel Buttry

"Carbon Capture and Sequestration Using Organosulfur Compounds"

“Joe's work on electrogenerated sulfur nucleophiles was a significant contribution to our goal of developing energy efficient electrochemical carbon dioxide capture methods.  His synthetic skills and his enthusiasm to test new hypotheses have made a real difference to our laboratory.”  – Daniel Buttry

Ahmed Yousaf, PhD (Chemistry), Mentor: Alexander Green

"Liquid-Phase Exfoliation and Applications of Pristine Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenides and Metal Diborides"

“Ahmed is a unique scientist in the breadth of his research and the fearlessness with which he has tackled new projects and techniques. His work on the synthesis and chemical modification of new two-dimensional materials will have a major impact on the field and has potential applications in areas ranging from 3D printing to drug delivery to atmospheric reentry vehicles.”– Alexander Green
