George M. Bateman Memorial Scholarship

The George M. Bateman Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of George M. Bateman to support an outstanding student in the School of Molecular Sciences. Dr. Bateman was the first faculty member with a doctoral degree at Arizona State Teacher's College and was instrumental in the development of many physical science departments. The Bateman Physical Sciences Building is named after him.

The George M. Bateman Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an excellent Arizona-resident student in their first year in college studying chemistry, biochemistry or biophysics.

Amount: $1,500

Applicants should be in first year of college and have graduated from an Arizona high school.

Therald Moeller Scholarship

 

The Therald Moeller Scholarship was established in honor of Emeritus Professor Therald Moeller to support a student in the School of Molecular Sciences. Dr. Moeller, past Chair of the former Chemistry Department, was instrumental in advancing inorganic chemistry as a discipline at the national level. He authored or edited texts used for advanced Inorganic Chemistry courses and was co-founder of the American Chemical Society Division of Inorganic Chemistry.

Preference will be given to students with an interest in a career in chemistry.

Wayne W. Luchsinger Chemistry Scholarship

 

Emeritus Professor Wayne W. Luchsinger established this scholarship to support an undergraduate student majoring in chemistry or biochemistry in the School of Molecular Sciences. The GI Bill provided Dr. Luchsinger with support to go to college, and preference for this scholarship will be given to veterans of one of the U.S. military services.

Arizona Society for Coatings Technology Scholarship

 

Arizona Society for Coatings Technology is comprised of representatives from the paint and coatings industry. This scholarship supports students with the potential to make a positive impact on these industries in Arizona including those with knowledge of chemistry lab skills and experience with (bio)polymers. Preference will be given to applicants with research experience relevant to coatings, paint and polymers. In addition to the monetary award, the recipient will be granted a student membership in the Arizona Society for Coatings Technology for the award year. Preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in the School of Molecular Sciences.

Edward B. Skibo Memorial Scholarship

 

The Edward B. Skibo Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of ASU chemistry professor Edward B. Skibo to create a permanent legacy of his research and teaching contributions to medicinal and organic chemistry.

The Edward B. Skibo Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student with an interest in a career in organic or medicinal chemistry. Preference is given to students who have completed research in medicinal or organic chemistry especially with a supervisor in the School of Molecular Sciences. Preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in the School of Molecular Sciences.

John Holloway Undergraduate Scholarship 

 

The John Holloway Undergraduate Scholarship was established in honor of Emeritus Professor John Holloway. Dr. Holloway came to ASU as part of an effort to combine the research fields of chemistry and geology. He built an innovative and highly productive experimental program in high-pressure research and became a world-famous experimental petrologist. His Depths of the Earth (DotE) laboratory served as a nexus for students of all levels, researchers, and visitors from around the world. The John Holloway Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded once annually to a student pursuing a degree in the School of Molecular Sciences. Preference will be given to those students evidencing aptitude to make significant contributions in a science or technology career.

Ted Brown Memorial Scholarship

 

The Ted Brown Memorial Chemistry Scholarship was established in honor of Emeritus Professor Ted Brown. During his 36 years at ASU, Ted Brown undertook research in transition metal chemistry, with particular focus on the early metals from Groups IV, V and VI. He was a visiting Professor at Imperial College, London in 1973 and at Purdue University in 1981. In addition to teaching both general chemistry and inorganic chemistry, he was also the Associate Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry from 1987 - 1997.

The Ted Brown Memorial Chemistry Scholarship is awarded annually to a first generation undergraduate student with documented financial need as defined by ASU Financial Aid and Scholarship Services. Preference will be given Native American students who have an affiliation with a federally-recognized or state-recognized tribe.

Martin Hudson Scholarship for Carbon Capture and Sustainable Energy

The Martin Hudson Scholarship for Carbon Capture and Sustainable Energy was created by Martin N. Hudson. Hudson received his BSEE in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1984. His successful career includes time as Chief Engineer at Motorola, Nokia from 1985-2015. He has been Chief Technical Officer at TerraSol Solar, since 2010. Mr. Hudson is creating this scholarship to ensure that the creative Junior and Senior students who have an interest in the sustainability of our planet have the resources to participate in undergraduate research in carbon capture and sustainable energy productions.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student, who is a U.S. citizen, at the junior or senior level with a 2.5 cumulative GPA or above, and who is pursuing a BS in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Financial need may be considered. The donor has a preference that the selection process includes a recommendation from the Director of the Center for Bioenergy and Photosynthesis.

SMS Women in Molecular Science Scholarship

Historical structural barriers have made access to the study and practice of the sciences more challenging for women. We are motivated to increase the presence of women in our field because we know that diverse perspectives are specifically connected to the achievement of excellence. This scholarship is open to all students, of any gender identity, who express an interest in helping to increase the success and representation of women in all areas of chemistry and biochemistry.

Preference will be given to students engaged in research projects under the supervision of a School of Molecular Sciences faculty member.

Carleton Moore Graduate Scholarship

The Carleton Bryant Moore Memorial Geochemistry Scholarship is supported by an ASU Foundation endowment established by his wife Diane and his children Barbara and Robert in honor of Emeritus Professor Carleton Bryant Moore, a pioneering researcher in the field of meteorite studies, and the Founding Director of the Center for Meteorite Studies, one of ASU’s first-established research institutes that now houses one of the world's largest university-based meteorite collections.

Dr. Moore is credited as the first scientist to detect different carbons within lunar samples, which took place on-site at ASU following the Apollo 11 mission. He and his team then oversaw lunar sample carbon content analysis for each of the remaining Apollo missions at NASA’s Lunar Receiving Laboratory in Houston, Texas. He also was one of the researchers who identified the first extraterrestrial amino acids in freshly fallen meteorites. During his 42 years as Director of the Center for Meteorite Studies at ASU, Dr. Moore thrived on mentoring students, especially his graduate students. This scholarship continues Dr. Moore’s legacy of scientific and educational advancement.
